The Welsh Government has put placemaking at the heart of the planning system in Wales. One of the placemaking in action tools local authorities in Wales have been asked to consider to help recovery from the impacts of Covid-19 is the use of their compulsory purchase powers.

To support local authorities use their compulsory purchase powers, a priority of the Welsh Government is to implement reforms to streamline and modernise the compulsory purchase process in Wales.

To achieve this, the Welsh Government has published a consultation which seeks views on proposals to:
  • Modernise statutory compulsory purchase powers and procedures underpinned by primary legislation, and
  • Implement technical process improvements to streamline the compulsory purchase public inquiries and written representations procedures.
